Network Engineer

This position is for a Network Engineer who will develop configurations for network and network security equipment for industrial control systems.  The successful candidate will work as an integral part of a global team that is responsible for design, configuring and configuration automation, testing, installing, debugging, maintaining and supporting networks related to the Ovation control system.

The Ovation distributed control system (DCS) is built on a network spanning one or more plant sites, and connects controllers, consoles and support equipment together for communication of real time plant data, historical data, configuration information and other support data.  The network supporting the Ovation DCS is connected to other networks, systems and devices, including other industrial control systems, cyber security monitoring systems, plant data historians for performance analysis, remote access locations and other site specific assets as required.  This includes connecting to both company and third party systems.

Job Duties

  • Development of router and switch configurations
  • Conduct research and development into emerging network technologies and incorporate these as best practices into Emerson standard network solutions
  • Work with software developers to automate production of configurations
  • Work with non-network knowledgeable project and field engineers to design, install and trouble shoot networks and configurations
  • Document configurations and equipment installation procedures
  • Develop plans to test designs, configurations and equipment compatibility. 
  • Test network and security designs, and work with non-network knowledgeable engineers to test designs.

Experience and Education Requirements

A B.S degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Telecommunications or related Engineering discipline.

5 – 10 years of experience in networking or industrial communications

Extensive experience and/or course work with any of the following (preferably all):

  • Configuration of Network routers and switches
  • Configuration of Firewalls, Next Generation Firewalls, VPNs, and associated security / policy management components
  • Use of other network security devices and security methods
  • Routing and switching protocol configuration to support redundant, fault-tolerant network topologies
  • LAN and WAN network technologies such as wireless, MPLS, Metro Ethernet
  • Troubleshooting physical layer problems with copper and fiber-optic media

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Knowledge of network router, switch, and firewall configuration
  • Knowledge of VPNs, secure communication methods, encryption, PKI
  • Knowledge of scripting or programming languages
  • Knowledge of network protocols including STP, RSTP, EIGRP etc.

Desired Skills and Knowledge

At least a working knowledge of the following technical areas will be considered a plus

  • Familiarity with Cisco products
  • Familiarity with software design and development processes
  • Familiarity with industrial systems, including power generation, boiler and turbine systems, solar, nuclear and wind systems and water treatment systems
  • Knowledge of datalink protocols and SCADA systems
  • Familiarity with air gapped systems
  • Knowledge of network technology for industrial systems, including REP, PTP, PRP, Real Time Ethernet
  • Technology certifications, including CCNP or equivalent is a plus
