Turbomachinery Design Engineer

Description:

  The right candidate requires experience with mechanical designing. These skills will be applied in designing and solving issues in the development and production of turbomachinery, as well as other critical components for liquid rocket engines and hypersonic propulsion systems. This position will utilize in-depth working knowledge of technical principles, theories, and concepts within mechanical engineering to: develop design layouts, GD&T application, tolerance analysis, systems design and integration, fabrication process identification, and synthesis of higher-level requirements to component-level requirements.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Performing and supporting mechanical design activities for critical rocket and hypersonic propulsion system components and assemblies from concept through final, detailed design under limited direction
  • Developing design concepts, 3D models, and supporting the development of detailed drawings for the manufacture of parts
  • Key interactions with: component analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, and quality and customer support groups
  • Planning and executing design tasks with limited, general direction
  • Working effectively within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment
  • Conducting trade studies and developing schedules, test plans, and component specifications and procedures, as required
  • Supporting the procurement of development hardware, and the establishment of manufacturing processes
  • Interfacing with supplies and assuring design requirement and intent are met
  • Assisting in the identification and support of risk reduction and environmental test requirements, including: manufacturing pathfinders, subscale testing, component and system-level qualification tests, and developing test plans and technical reviews
  • Generating design substantiation documentation to support technical meetings and review of engineering designs (CoDR, PDR, CDR), and presenting information to internal and external customers

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in appropriate engineering discipline required
  • Master’s degree preferred

 

Requirements:

  • Rocket propulsion design experience preferred
  • Prior turbomachinery design or development experience required
  • Understanding of ramjet operation and design
  • Knowledgeable of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and related specifications
  • Clear and concise communication skills
  • Understanding of appropriate codes, regulations ,and specifications, as well as applicable customer requirements
  • Knowledgeable of Computer-Aided Design (CAD- Pro/E, Creo2 preferred), and Computer-Aided Manufacture (CAM) methods and techniques
  • Experience with design practices, manufacturing techniques, and inspection requirements
  • Knowledgeable of various computer systems to product data, analysis, and reports
  • U.S. Citizenship required (dual citizenship may preclude candidacy)
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance
