Title: software engineer

Location: Yorktown Heights (must be local)

Client is  looking for a practical software engineer with strong development skills to assist the the Project team in the hardening/stabilization of proof-of-concept code, as well as integrating existing research systems on a path towards commercialization. The ideal applicant will have a solid history of software implementation in Java, with applied experience in gridded file formats, XML, and SQL. Candidates should have end-to-end experience spanning end-user applications and back-end infrastructure frameworks. Applicants should be well versed in customer/stakeholder requirements gathering, agile development practices, and have experience working on successful large-scale commercial software systems/customer facing prototypes through multiple iterations/sprints. Attention to software design for continuous availability, reliability, and serviceability are a must. Experience with mobile applications considered a plus.

The candidate will work from high-level specification/instruction and be responsible for low level design and implementation. This will involve autonomy and ability to do agile development and communicate status/demonstrate meaningful progress. A proven understanding of interface design and abstraction is required at the practical level. The ideal candidate will spend 90% or more of their week performing software development. Occasional installation/configuration of new software packages (commercial/open source, stand-alone, or set up as web accessible services for the department) is to be expected occasionally.

Required

At least 5 years experience working with Linux/Unix environments,

At least 5 years practical experience with JAVA or C/C++.

Experience writing servlets or RESTFUL interfaces for complex software systems.

At least 2 years experience processing XML

At least 3 years applied experience with Javascript, and scripting languages (e.g., Python).

At least 1 year practical experience with installation/configuration of DB2, MySQL, Postgres or other relational DB system and ongoing maintenance.

At least 1 year practical experience with installation/configuration of a web container such as IBM WebSphere or Apache Tomcat

 

Preferred

Experience with iOS/Android Programming for mobile development

Experience working with software research and prototype software systems

OpenGL experience

Experience with file formats from GIS applications such as PovRay, Collada, OpenDX, OGR, GDAL.

Education: Bachelor's Degree or higher

Start Date: ASAP
